Who is eligible for a Weinert Bursary:

  • The applicant must be a South African citizen
  • The applicant must be studying or intending to study in the fields of Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Physics (photonics specialty preferable) or Mechatronic Engineering at WITS, SU, NMU and UP.

Age requirements:

  • Undergraduate bursary: applicant must be under the age of 21 in the year of their application
  • Masters: applicant must be under the age of 26 in the year of their application
  • PhD: applicant must be under the age of 30 in the year of their application

Academic average requirements:

  • Undergraduate: A minimum of 60% in Pure Mathematics and a minimum average of 70% for preliminary Grade 12 results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Masters: A Bachelor of Science Honours in a related field with a minimum weighted average of 65%.
  • PhD: A Research Master’s degree in a related field. Moreover, an academic supervisor must be identified and approached prior to application.
